It’s an AI-powered tool that helps you practise speaking English in short, one‑to‑one conversations. It gives you a safe and low‑pressure way to speak, repeat, and build confidence.
| Speaking Companion is available with selected Cambridge One courses. If you don’t see it in your course, please ask your teacher for help. |
Meet your Companion Calli, an avatar who asks you questions, listens to you and adapts the conversation to your answers.
When you use Speaking Companion for the first time, you will see audio and microphone checks, and be reminded that you are speaking with AI. You’ll then be introduced to Calli.
Each activity begins with a goal and tips. Some activities include a short text or video. Sometimes you can choose a focus area such as a skill or context.
You can stop the conversation at any time by closing the activity or by telling Calli that you want to stop. If you don’t, the activity will end when the time limit is reached.
After you finish speaking, you receive feedback. This includes:
- A rewards screen with information on how many conversations you have completed, and the total time spent speaking with Calli
- A vocabulary chart showing the CEFR levels of the meaning words (words such as nouns, verbs or adjectives) you used
- A transcript of your conversation. On the transcript page, you can play recordings, edit your text if Calli did not hear your words correctly, and listen to the corrected text read aloud.
Spending time with the Speaking Companion does not generate scores. Only activity completion, number of attempts, and time spent speaking appear in your progress data.
